PROF. JK MITRA SPEAKS ABOUT HIS FABULOUS JOURNEY OF LIFE AND CAREER HIS TEACHING METHODS, AND THE GLORIOUS PAST OF IIPM, TO PROF. JAYDIP DUTTA GUPTA AND ARCHANA SHARMA.

Simplicity is the most powerful yet harmless weapon one can have. Prof. JK Mitra is one such man and his life's gaph is truly exponential by nature. Determination and dedication are adundant in his educational background which includes BA Hons., MA Hons, and PhD in Psychology. Prof. Mitra got associated with IIPN in 1982 and is adored by one and all for his immaculate teaching methodologies which appear elusive to many a modern day professors. A legend by every sense of imagination, Prof. Mitra is living proof that, with spirit and belief, there is nothing that cannot be done. He recalls his days of youth when he was a typical Bengali, much in lines with the inspirational Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Anand.'

Robert Frost's poem in the year 1915 ended with the words, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference”. Similarly, Prof. Mitra has trailed a trek that needs immense determination and it is not for people who choose the path that has been trailed by many people before. Dr. J.K. Mitra got into RK Mission in West Bengal which was one of the best schools back then housing the Xth toppers from across the state. “RK Mission had the reputation of putting people into streams that suit their attitude”, he iterates. His mother wanted him to become a doctor, and his father wanted an engineer, but in accordance with Robert Frost, Prof. Mitra opted for psychology. At St. Xavier's College he pursued his BA. Hons in Psychology. This was also the college where Dr. JC Bose studied. “I topped the batch, won a gold medal, and received national scholarship”, he reminds us with joy. He then adds, “Those days were a different kind of time”.

Prof. Mitra then moved to Delhi for his MA. “I also got the job of research associate at the University of Delhi”. After completing that, Prof. Mitra pursued his PhD from Calcutta University and worked as lecturer there in the Department of Advanced Psychology. He spent four years there. After his marriage, he finally got back to Delhi in 1982. He remembers how Prof. NR Chatterji used to cajole him to start teaching at IIPM. “I also remember how Dr. MK Chaudhuri used to visit canteens of institutes and find out about the best professors from the students, before inviting them to take classes at IIPM”, he adds. Those days for two sessions, the fee was Rs. 37.50. This is how Prof. Mitra finally got associated with IIPM. “I was teaching subjects like Organisational Behavior, Group Dynamics, Industrial Psychology, and, Management by Objective”, he says.

Prof. Mitra remembers, “The infrastructure was not great back then, but, the basics were right always”. There were overhead projectors in IIPM which many institutes did not possess. He tells us that Dr. MK Chaudhuri was very adaptive to technology. Maximum emphasis was made to get the best books for the students, and the quality of students was good. “The main difference was noticed in the students when they graduated. There was treamendous value addition in the final output that came out of IIPM”, he opines. The highlights of the curriculum according to him were the freedom to learn, experiment, innovative, and actively participate. He talks about how Dr. MK Chaudhuri used to feel that management was the most interesting course to teach and learn because of the rich pedagogy. “With the various case studies, games presentations, debates, the students got phenomenal exposure. Even ordinary and nervous individuals came out as eloquent speakers and went on to ride the corporate tide with panache”.

Speaking on the cherished memories at IIPM, Prof. Mitra believes that everything back then was fun. He says, “If you love a place and the people, and they love you back, you will enjoy every single moment of yours”. That is why he feels that he never got strained by teaching. A firm believer in solid work, Prof. Mitra reveals how he had a totally different approach towards case studies to ensure that every student reads in at least once. “I used to take a rapid fire round of some 40 questions from the case study in 'true' or 'false' frame, and one could answer them correctly only on reading the case”. Coming to Indian education, Prof. Mitra says that the idea of education is to develop a strong foundation to allow students to explore, thing, imagine, experiment, and generalize. According to him, the prime reason for the success of IIPM is the fearless attitude. “Once you are fearless, you are ready to face any challenge head-on”. Also, because of Dr. MK Chaudhuri, some of the best practices were adpoted from XLRI. Today, he thinks IIPM has grown manifold times. “It is one of the best publishing houses in terms of variety”. He appreciates the initiative to start “Cult” which will help the alumni to reconnect. But, he emphasizes that there are more frontiers to conquer for IIPM. He goes on to opine how Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri has given it a grand shape since 2000, and many a times people do not recall the early hardships that Dr. MK Chaudhuri had to face.

Prof. Mitra claims, “Few more leaders are required in the field of teaching with higher levels of passion”. Interested in cooking, classical music, and mythology & sci-fi TV serials, He met his wife Mrs. Chhanda Mitra during his days of MA in Delhi. They have two sons Wrick and Ritwik. And then, he uses the simplest of lines with the most sublime message, “I generally enjoy everything around”.

To the young aspirants of today, his message is to try and develop a strong self belief. One should not expect that everything one does is going to be perfect. He explains how making an incremental improvement everyday is important. “As long as you have the spirit to improve, you will end up being a happy person if not the most successful”. He then concludes by stating that at the end of the journey, one must be able to say with pride, “I tried my best.”

MR. AMIT SAXENA TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR SALES & MARKETING AND HIS LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN AN INTERACTION WITH ARCHANA SHARMA

It was overwhelming to see a big smtile on his face the moment we entered his office. He is a very Jovial, courteous, sophisticated and friendly person with a positive approach and a very honest individual by nature. He is a person who places immense trust and confidence in the people he works with. His interest for marketing & sales shows how dedicated and hardworking he is. He has a great personality and an even greater sense of humor. He follows a participative style of leadership and believes personal engagement with the employees is very important and so is emotional quotient is applicable. Today he is a successful professional and delivers best in his career role.

Mr. Amit Saxena has had an intensive career in corporate sales and is still going strong in his knowledge base and learning. His stepping stone in sales began back in 1998 when he joined HOPE Technologies Ltd. After gaining an experience of 4 years over there as an Area Manager for sales, Mr. Saxena's next stop was Aditya Infotech. He served there as Regional Sales Manager for almost 2 years. His career graph in sales kept its flight with GrapeCity India where he was Sales Manager for another couple of years. And, since June 2006, Mr. Saxena has been the Regional Sales & Channel director at Bentley Systems for South-East Asia operations.

“Good management is the art of making problems so interesting and their solutions so constructive, that everyone wants to get to work and deal with them.” For our 1998 pass out Mr. Amit Saxena, his course at IIPM helped him improve on certain areas he was not noticing till that time. He says he learned a lot about finance at IIPM and also Executive communication especially on how to give presentations, that learning continued for 4-5 years and it still continues. He remembers P.C. Bagga sir and his classes. The Placement also happened at IIPM. It was easy to get into an organization but it was more important to get the right one. He had a group of ten people at IIPM and they had loads of fun during their college days at IIPM as they used to organize various parties.

Mr. Saxena was among the last few people who got placed. He wanted something in sales or marketing in the technology sector. At IIPM, he got the placement that he wanted, and since 14 years he has been in this industry. Now, he is into a business where they say, “They Improve the quality of life of people”. India is changing and it is a growing economy and he feels good that he is a part of an organization that is contributing towards this change. His attitude hasn't changed a bit but things around have changed a lot. His career started with campus placement at Hope Technology with a little known background. It was a software product company and he always wanted to join that. During the placement season at IIPM, he was getting very choosy about his placement, so Prof. A. Sandeep asked him what kind of a placement he wanted. They got this company for him which required people from Civil and Merhanical engineering but he was an Electronic Engineer. It was a challenge for him and he worked there for four years. Mr. Saxena had a great learning experience in his first job. Subsequently, he grew from a sales executive to an Area sales manager and when he joined Aditya, he was a Regional sales manager. His earlier years of work till Aditya was completely in an Indian environment and then he moved to a Japanese company, Grape City which was a software development company and this profile included less of sales. He worked there for two years and then after this Bentley happened to him. It is purely a software company for Infrastructure development.

Mr. Saxena has been managing teams since 10 years. But, at Bentley, specifically he is managing teams in India as well as in South East Asia. As a Global company he is getting to move in other areas as well. He shares that the software solutions market in India is very big but engineering side is a very niche sector. The twelve year plan is coming and major investment is going into infrastructure, and Bentley provides tools for that. Whether it is a metro or petrochemicals, many more organizations who are big clients of their solutions, will be getting in new projects. They are also a part of Reliance refinery, which is the largest in the world.

On asking his take on Engineering with MBA as a course, he says, the combination is great as it helps a lot. Most of the things he grabbed were because of engineering but over a period of time he realized some was due to MBA at IIPM.

During his summer training at Schlumberger he did marketing research for India's Electricity Scenario. It was very interesting, as he had to travel to remote areas not only in Delhi but also in parts of Patiala and Mumbai – where there was privatization of electricity, and get a feedback from them. The company did not give such projects to freshers, but he was fortuitous enough to get something like this in his training period.

Mr. Saxena does not follow any particular leadership style as he has been learning till now about how to manage teams. Earlier he had a team of five to six Indian people, but now the team he manages includes people from different places like Philippines, Malaysia. He ascertains that basic leadership qualities remain the same and they just differ a little according to the people. His style is more participative. He acts as a guide to new people. He just needs to tell them what they have3 to do and how they will go about it.

According to Mr. Amit Saxena there is a lot of difference between a college and workstation. It is very different for a new person especially who has only been there in the organization for 6-7 Months. It takes time for them to settle down and get used to new technologies. He feels that the very low level of attrition at Bentley Systems is because of a great work culture. The challenges are already disclosed to the employees as the interviews conducted by them are very open. They hire people from IIT's NIIT's and students from regular engineering colleges as well as well as people from non engineering background.

Mr. Saxena states that the impact of recession was very much evident at Bentley as their core business is related to infrastructure and the economy. During recession, all the projects were seized, and work flow came to a standstill. This had a direct impact on their revenues.

For young aspirants, Mr. Saxena says that a technical back-ground certainly helps. The concepts are there but things are changing fast. And hence he feels that it is imperative to have good leadership skills. A clear vision along with hard work, are also very important. “Make it a passion if you like it”. Affirms Mr. Saxena. He also adds that one should never underestimate what he or she is doing. He urges the youth to create opportunities, work hard, and learn regularly. He affirms that reading is very important to keep pace with people. “There are so many people learning today. And never forget the rule that whatever you have been doing in past leads you where you are today”, he opines.

On Bentley's corporate structure, Amit Saxena opines that, nowadays, most organizations invest a lot into corporate grooming as it is a very important aspect while representing an organization. He says, “One should be smart and sharp in understanding what your organization wants from you”. The account managers are also directly reporting to him. He is managing people who are sitting in Malaysia and is engaged into remote management as he needs to keep pace with people. He also needs to find a reason as to why a person is not performing well, and find a solutions to it. Mr. Saxena iterates that one needs to get into their group of juniors. They need to engage people into participative style of leadership. “Personal engagement with the employees is very important and the emotional quotient is applicable”, he adds.

On being asked about the pre-requisites of a good salesperson, Mr. Saxena says that the DNA of sales professional is to meet their targets and proper communication is very important. As new products are being released everyday they need to keep pace with that by being well informed. Pick up a few points and work on it. Real well about your customer and don't forget moral grounds are very important too.

When asked to share something personal, Mr. Saxena speaks candidly about his wife and family. Mr. Saxena's wife is a veterinary doctor. She comes from Ludhiana. She was a top performing student in her class and she was 2^nd in Ludhiana. She did her B.V.S and masters from Punjab Agricultural University. She works in an old veterinary clinic, that is running since 1963 and is associated with it for seven years. They have a single daughter Ashvika. He travels a lot due to his work but he makes sure that he spends weekends with them. His organization takes them on holidays when they achieve targets, to very exotic locations. Where he gets to spend time with his colleagues as well his family. In closing, Mr. Saxena share his love for cricket and informs us that he won “The man of the match” in a tournament in Delhi which was sponsored by Mail Today. So if not a corporate, he would have been a cricketer. Thus it is often said, 'to each, his own'! We at Cult express our deep regards for his future endeavors.

The verbosity of the authors in brutally criticising today’s CEOs is commendable, with none of the accusations that the authors throw on today’s CEOs (some of who, the authors prove, are almost criminally destroying the organisation’s wealth) failing to miss its mark. At the same time, the authors leave no expenses in their praise for the sincerely committed CEOs, many who are named in the innumerable examples and research nuggets within CULT.

In this book, it is mentioned that if “research and development” is an immediate negative strategy, then “diversification” is a supremely positive one. If having “women CEOs” may bring down shareholders’ wealth, then ensuring that family businesses aren’t run by the successors of founding families, actually increases the same wealth. If “CSR” should never be practiced, then “celebrity endorsements” necessarily should be. The authors also specifically mention that CULT is meant for the hallowed class of CEOs of transnational corporations.

For starters, if they have invested their invaluable few pennies in the stock of any global company, this book provides them an immediate benchmark to rate their CEO (and the company) against the world’s best performing ones.

Management guru Arindam Chaudhuri`s Delhi franchise will be called `Delhi Gypsies and Billionaires` in the upcoming i1 Super Series league, it was announced.

Planman Stars, a company promoted by Arindam Chaudhuri of IIPM, is the owner of the Delhi team in i1 Super Series and is expected to invest about USD 5-6 million in the league`s maiden year.

"Motorsports is as much a sport for the gypsies at heart as for the billionaires by style! The name is as much a tribute to Delhi, the city which is often referred to as Dilwalon ki Dilli, as to the city which boasts of the highest number of billionaires and is undoubtedly the style capital of India," Chaudhuri said in a statement.

"I believe sports greatly unite a community and a country over and above any differences that may exist in views, class and opinions. Nothing else can channelize the competitive spirit and passion of the youth in a more positive manner than sports.”

"That is what we aim to do through a new age sport like competitive motor racing, which has got high attention and is here to stay," Arindam added.

The i1 Super Series have already announced four franchises in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan is the owner of the Mumbai team while leading Tollywood superstar Nagarjuna took over the Hyderabad side.

Arindam Chaudhuri bags Delhi team of i1 Super Series

The caste and crew members of the upcoming film were at the institute's campus for a promotional event, performing on numbers from the flick and also giving out audio CDs to students

Make some noise for the Desi Boyz'- this was the line heard at IIPM, when the caste and crew members of the upcoming movie "Desi Boyz" gave a live dance performance at the campus on November 17.

The entire crew, including actors Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh, went full blast on stage on Desi Boyz numbers in front of a very enthusiastic crowd of students. One of the students in the audience said, "It was entertaining for us to watch a live performance by some of our favourite actors. It was an exhilarating performance."

The bikers' way
Both the male actors of the movie, Akshay and John, started with a dramatic entry by riding on their motorbikes at the campus and the excited crowd followed their movements. Their entry was followed by Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Sen, who responded equally well to the cheering audience.

The crew, during their performance, gave out music CDs to the crowd, giving a personal touch to the promotion campaign. Prof Arindam Chaudhuri, director, IIPM Think Tank, said, "At IIPM, we love exposing our students to the lighter side of life constantly, for there is always a lot to learn from it! A first-hand interactive experience with four successful Bollywood icons would definitely inspire them to strive for greater heights in life. Akshay Kumar, of course was looking as fresh and young as many of our students."

IIPM Professor Arindam Chaudhuri on 'OBAMA and OSAMA'

Prof. Kamel Jedidi (John A. Howard professor of Marketing at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, New York) visited IIPM Bhopal and delivered a lecture to students on “Customer-Centric New Product Development”.

Event Overview: with respect to its Global Outreach Program (GOP) a Guest Lecture has been organized by Planman HR Chief Executive Forum & IIPM Bhopal on Friday, April 22, 2011 at IIPM Bhopal where Prof. Kamel Jedidi (John A. Howard professor of Marketing at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, New York) delivered a lecture to students on “Customer-Centric New Product Development”.

In this lecture, he focused on various aspects of developing innovative products and services. He discussed the challenges of bringing to market elegant and efficient solutions to strong consumer needs; various steps of innovation process and state of the art frameworks, concepts and tools used by innovative companies to ensure new product success; different ideation templates and so on. The program aimed to provide the students an insight of identifying growth opportunities and generating new product ideas at the same time bringing the voice of customer in product design.
The Guest Lecture was highly motivating and inspiring to all students. All students actively participated in session and thus gained a lot of knowledge on Customer-Centric New Product Development. Prof. Jitendra Singh Chouhan (Associate Dean, IIPM Bhopal) felicitated Prof. Kamel Jedidi with a bouquet and a momento at the beginning and the end of the session respectively.

IIPM Chandigarh Participated in the live show called Pride Of The Cricket Cup which got telecasted in NDTV 24/7, where in 30 students from the fall winter batch (MBA) had participated on 30th March 2011 and 30 students from the Fall Winter and Spring Summer batch (BBA) had participated on 31st March 2011.

Students were all exited to meet the pioneers of cricket - Sunil Gavaskar, Ajay jadeja and Dean Jones. It was a great experience for one and all... Most of the queries for the discussions were put forward by IIPM Chandigarh students and not only this they were the ones who also cheered team India by singing a song.

The questions they asked were , since shahid afridi is performing consistently in world cup and is the leading wicket taker what should be Indian strategy to win against Afridi who should play like hell to win this match , its being said that Pakistans batting is weak and Indians bowling is weak what is the effect of this weakness in todays India VS Pakistan match.

It was overall a great experience and students look forward to participate in more up coming sessions

IIPM Chandigarh organized a Global Outreach Program on Global Trends in International Governance on 12th April and the guest of honor was Prof. Dennis Chookaszian from Columbia Business School.

Prof. Chookaszian is currently the chairman of FASAC (Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council) which provides guidance to the FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board) on accounting matters. He is also a member of the FCAG (Financial Crisis Advisory Group) which is the international commission that was created to develop recommendations to solve the financial reporting problems associated with the current economic problems.

During his career, he has served as a director on the boards of ten publicly traded corporations. He is currently a director of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the world’s largest derivatives exchange, Career Education, a private post secondary education provider, Loop Net, an internet based commercial real estate listing service, Ins Web, an internet based insurance purchasing service, and MacDonald Dettwiler, an information services company. He has also been a director of a number of private corporations and has served as an arbitrator in ten diverse cases.

Professor Amit Baruah, Dean IIPM Chandigarh threw a light on evolution of management practices in India and its applicability to the Indian Business Environment along with the factors affecting the same.

The program was attended by IIPM Chandigarh students and eminent individuals representing corporate houses like Quark, Videocon, People Factor, Tata Tele Services, Realtime Management, DLF and SBI who desire to advance to top management positions. The session also focused on the evolution of management practices in the United States and the applicability to the Indian business environment. Further the manner in which its applicable to both public and private corporations and not for profit organizations. The differences in corporate governance in other countries, as well as current trends in corporate governance, was also discussed. It was a very enriching sessions for both the corporates and the student fraternity.

IIPM is India's premier business school. IIPM has come a long way since its inception three decades back in 1973. What was conceived as an institute to study and conduct research on the management of national economic planning , has today been deemed as one of the largest academic movement of the country-The IIPM Movement. IIPM, being one of the leading management institutes in the country paves the path for the generation of today to excel and be the best leaders of today. IIPM does not only focus on academic development but also has always been paving the way for one's overall improvement and encouragement of each student to explore and boost their abilities keeping pace with a dynamic business environment. IIPM organises various sporting and extracurricular activities in its campus over the years. One of the important event being the Great Debate Competition known as the Cicero's challenge. Cicero was an orator,statesman, political theorist,lawyer and a philosopher of ancient Rome. He is considered by many to be amongst the greatest of Latin orators and prose writers and this mega event is dedicated to this great maestro.

Cicero's challenge aims at bringing the students of different nationalities together on a common platform to share their thoughts , views and perspectives.

IIPM has been organising India's largest inter-school debate competition -Cicero's Challenge at the IIPM international campus, Satbari from 2006 onwards. In 2006, it was the first time ever an initiative was taken by a b school to create a platform for a school level debate competition in the city. IIPM, New Delhi organizes Cicero's challenge every year to encourage young minds meet and ideate.

Last year in 2010, over 150 schools participated in this event. Students from countries like sri lanka, singapore, turkey, dubai, mauritius, pakistan, south africa, france and many more, flew in to be a part of this historic event. To judge the Great Indian Debate competition we had Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri (Hony. Dean, IIPM), Rajat Sharma (CEO and Editor in chief, India TV), Deepika Jindal (owner of Art d inox), Sulajja Motwani (MD, Kinetic Engineering Ltd.), as our honorable judges.

The events platter at Cicero's also included events like 360 degrees,face painting,choreography,Ad Mad and many more. Live performance by Fuzon, kept the audience awestruck.

The first prize was cash amount of Rs. One lakh. Cicero challenge 2010 was one of the most memorable and blissful event of the year. The magnitude of the event was humungous as it involved participation of more than 60 schools, out of which 19 were international. The huge pool of knowledge raised the level of enthusiasm and confidence of the participants and made the environment all the more interesting and captivating. There were more than 150 participants from different International and National schools, however only top 23 reached the Grand Finale on 6th September2010, and the competition was tough and exciting.

IIPM known for its innovative initiatives and this was one of them which had carved for paying a common platform for students from different walks of life. Cicero's 2010, had left an unremarkable and unforgettable memory in everyone's life.

The Real essence of Cicero’s Carnival 2011 was its flagship event Cicero’s Challenge-The Great Indian Debate Competition. The topic for the final round held on 6th May 2011 was “Thinkers, Not Doers, Spearhead a Revolution”.

The final round was a nail biting event for the audience and a task for the judges, Mrs Preeti Surekha (Director – Emami), Mr Pooran Pandey (Director – Times Foundation) and our beloved dean, Mr Arindam Chaudhuri, to judge and fish out 3 winners from a pool of talent. However, after a close scrutiny and long discussion, Harshi Kher of Ryan International School, vasant kunj aced the Cicero’s Challenge title and walked away with cash prize of 1, 00,000/- rupees along with NXI notebook and Hercules Rodeo Bicycle while the other awardees Venu prea (Montfort School) and Mallika Kamal (Modern School, Vasant Vihar) received cash prize of 50,000/- and 25,000/-along with NXI i-pad, NXI optical mouse and Hercules Rodeo bicycle .

Kapil Sibal Disagrees With Jairam Ramesh Over IITs And IIMs World Class Faculty

The quality of faculty in IITs and IIMs has divided the government, with HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Thursday politely rebuffing his Cabinet colleague Jairam Ramesh for his criticism of poor faculty in these institutions of higher learning.

In a sharp riposte to environment minister’s comment that IIT was not doing quality research, the HRD minister said, “We need to base our discussion on evidence not on perception.”

“There is hardly any worthwhile research from our IITs. The faculty in the IIT is not world class. It is the students in IITs who are world class. So the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) are excellent because of the quality of students not because of quality of research or faculty,” Ramesh had told reporters on the sidelines of a function in the national Capital on May 23.

Unlike Ramesh’s remark that was made in his individual capacity, Sibal had the endorsement of the Group of Ministers on media briefing. The GoM — consisting of home minister P Chidambaram, I&B minister Ambika Soni, health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, minority and corporate affairs minister Salman Khurshed and others — had decided that the record on the issue should be set straight. Many IIT/IIM directors had also protested to Sibal about Ramesh’s remark.

While not joining issue with Ramesh, Sibal said the comment of environment minister should be seen in the light of general opinion within the country that the quality of faculty in IITs does not match the world standards. “But in case of IITs, the situation might not be the same,” he said.

He said if factors like availability of foreign faculty, foreign students and medical courses are excluded, IIT-Bombay would rank 20 in the global index, followed by IIT-Delhi at 24, IIT-Kanpur (37) and IIT Madras (39). “If you talk of IITs as engineering institutes they are right there,” he said. Sibal also said 24.7% of teachers in IITs were IIT students. “Surely they are world class,” he said.

However, the HRD minister admitted that in “reality IITs have not gained critical mass to change global scientific discourse”.

He said, “But this has nothing to do with the quality of faculty. It is related to the ecosystem. In India, $8 billion is spent on research whereas the US spends $250 billion. The kind of research grants available abroad is absent in India. Also, there is lack of infrastructure and capital investment. The faculty cannot be blamed for this.”

In reality, IITs have not gained critical mass to change global scientific discourse... But this has nothing to do with the quality of .

The Indian higher education system, which had considerably stagnated for a while, is on its way to a significant transformation. Students will have access to more specialised, flexible course options, better research facilities and international perspective. They will also be able to save heavily on travel, accommodation and living expenses.

Twinning programmes
A twinning programme is one where you can do parts of the same course in two different countries. For instance, you can study at an Indian college for the first and second years and then continue the third year at a foreign university, which saves you a considerable amount of money.

Jai Hind College’s BMM faculty has tied up with Bournemouth University in the UK, whereby students have the option to study their final year at the Bournemouth campus, with an automatic scholarship of £3000. Bournemouth, known for its media courses, is also in talks with Whistling Woods International for a similar partnership. For its arts students, Jai Hind has partnered with Nottingham Trent University, UK, where students can study for one term. Similar exchanges for other science and management courses are in the pipeline.

St Xavier’s college offers a tie-up with University of Bath, UK for biotechnology programmes and with Teesside University, UK for social research and development.

HR College has collaborative courses with campuses abroad such as SP Jain Institute of Management in Singapore and Australia and New York University’s Abu Dhabi campus for BBA programmes.

Ecube Global college only has the twinning option for engineering students, where they study one year in the Thane campus and the following two years at Newcastle University, UK. These students are given a £3000 fee waiver.

SP Jain Institute of Management offers Global MBA and BBA programmes, where students can study in Mumbai, Dubai, Singapore and Sydney.
Internships, research and student exchange partnerships

Welingkar, as part of its ‘global college’ philosophy, has partners in various countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. These tie-ups are for research exchanges and student exchange programmes. They also have partners for internship opportunities in these countries in Germany, the USA and Sweden.

Malardalen University, Sweden: Has partnerships with the Welingkar’s B-school for exchange programmes, and has a collaborative ‘Innovation centre’ where business ideas are incubated.

The Swedish university is also in talks with Mumbai University for partnerships at the Masters and PhD level, and to set up a ‘technology park’ for research in innovation technology, and an incubation center. Also exploring partnerships with IIT Bombay, XLRI.

IIT-Bombay has also signed a partnership with Brown University, USA for student exchanges slated to start 2011.

On March 30, 2011 a special guest lecture has been held at IIPM Bhopal in which Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Adarsh Katiyar visited the campus and conducted an interactive session for the students of IIPM Bhopal. In the session, he discussed his approach towards “Managing stress on 24x7 demanding job environment; Marshalling & managing resources in times of disasters; Uplifting the morale of police officers under socio-political environment.”

The program aimed to provide the students an insight of management practice in Police Department. Students came to know various aspects of policing. The session turned out to be highly encouraging and thought-provoking to all students. IIPM announces Anna Hazare Fellowship

Award Conferred To Irom Chanu Sharmila By IIPM

After Irom Sharmila in 2010, it is Anna Hazare who has won the 2011 IIPM Rabindranath Tagore International Peace Prize. In a bid to show strong solidarity to Anna Hazare’s determined and non-violent protest against corruption and the institution of a Jan Lokpal Bill, IIPM, the foremost institute of higher learning in the areas of management, entrepreneurship and National Economic Planning, today declared to award the veteran activist with prize money of Rs.1 crore. This was declared by Prof Arindam Chaudhuri, Director of IIPM Think Tank, after he met Anna Hazare at the protest venue near Jantar Mantar, in presence of IIPM’s Founder Director, Dr Malay Chaudhuri. The prestigious award, comprising of the highest prize money in this category in India, would be handed over to Anna Hazare on 9th May 2011 at a special ceremony being organised by the institute to commemorate the 150th Birth Anniversary of India’s first Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Arindam Chaudhuri commented, “This award is to pay our sincere gratitude to a person who has selflessly worked throughout his lifetime for the betterment of the society, working for the poor, the needy and the general public. His non-violent approach and awe-inspiring support base has truly made him a modern day Gandhi. We at IIPM stand in strong solidarity of his protest against corruption.”

Dr Malay Chaudhuri, expressed his strong desire to start an Anna Hazare Fellowship Programme in Rural Entrepreneurship and Leadership at IIPM. This programme aims to train 50 rural youths annually, selected from all across the country, with the required managerial and entrepreneurial skills. Once trained, these young rural entrepreneurs would be provided a monthly fellowship of Rs.4,000 which they would further utilise to bring about a sustainable economic development in their specified rural belts. Last year, IIPM had honored the ‘Iron Lady’ of Manipur, Irom Chanu Sharmila with the Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Peace Prize, for her determined and committed fight for over a decade, against the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).

IIPM has honored various noted individuals from different walks of life for their contribution in social welfare, literature, fine arts, culture, etc.

On Saturday afternoon, at the Kamani auditorium the who’s who of the Indian media industry got together to discuss the state of the media. While senior journalists of Delhi justified the present role of the media, they did not shirk from pointing its shortcomings and stressing the need for introspection.

The occasion was a seminar organized jointly by Planman Media Group’s magazine, The Sunday Indian and The Times Foundation. The seminar was titled “Janvani to Janta ki vani”.
Inaugurated by senior journalist Prabhu Chawla, the seminar was kicked off by the The Sunday Indian’s Editor-in-Chief and management guru Prof. Arindam Chaudhuri asking whether the media really represented the voice of the people. Chaudhuri said that this was the time for introspection as we seemed to have lost our path. He said it was the time to rise on the occasion rather than shirk from our responsibilities.

Presided over by Achutanand Mishra, the seminar had some prominent names on the panel, including Director General of Doordarshan Leeladhar Mandloi, group editor of Aaj Samaj Rahul Dev, Consulting Editor of Amar Ujala Ajay Upadhyay, Managing Editor of IBN 7 Ashutosh, Director of Times Foundation Puran Chand Pandey, Zee news anchor Purna Prasoon Vajpayee, President of Sadhna News Channel and General Secretary of Broadcast Editors’ Association NK Singh, Managing Editor of India News Kurbaan Ali, Officiating Editor of NDTV Sanjay Ahirwal, chief of News Express Channel Mukesh Kumar, senior writer and and programming head of Channel P7 Sharad Dutt, former chief producer of Doordarshan Kuber Dutt and writer and media critic Vartika Nanda.

Welcoming the guests, the Managing Editor of The Sunday Indian, Sutanu Guru said that media is for the people and it is responsible to the people, so it cannot shy away from its responsibility towards the people.

In his presidential address, Achutanand Mishra said that in India, media has come down to its lowest level and it is time to restore its influence and strength. Mishra said that in a democracy, media should not succumb to the pressures of the market.

The Managing Editor of IBN-7, Ashutosh said that India is changing, and in this process of change, media too is changing and this change is positive so there is no need to shed tears over it. Admitting that between n 2004-05 and in 2009, some activities of the media were blots on its character but it had since regenerated itself. Ashutosh said that in those corers of the world, where the media is strong, situations can never become like that in Egypt. The media had played a role in keeping the morale of the people.

The Group Editor of Aaj Samaj, Rahul Dev said that the media is under pressure from the market and the media does not have the strength to fight it out. So, not much can be expected from it. It is time to free the media from the pressures of the market and there is hope for it.
The Consultant Editor of Amar Ujala, Ajay Upadhay, said that the Indian media does not cross over its boundaries and it is balanced. He said that whether the media is the fourth pillar of democracy or not is to be debated afresh. There have always been questions about whether the media is the voice of the people but it does offer people a platform a vent their concerns.
Senior Journalist Punya Prasun Vajpayee said that today the media decides its direction according to the mathematics of profit and loss. And for this, media alone cannot be held responsible. The whole system is to be blamed for this. He said that under such circumstances, morality is only to be mentioned, not applied.

The General Secretary of the Broadcasting Editor’s Association, N K Singh said that the TAM meters are installed in only those places, where you have money and these are the places that decide the direction and path of a news channel. He said that unless channels get free from the shackles of TRPs, the cause of the people will remain sidelined and marginalised. He expressed confidence that within two years media content would improve dramatically.

The Managing Editor of India News, Qurban Ali, said that the country is not dependent on the media very much. The people of the nation are quite awakened and had exhibited maturity by rejecting NDA’s ‘Feel Good’ and ‘India Shining’ slogans and maintaining nationwide peace after the Ayodhya verdict. And the media did not play any role in it. And therefore it is time the media takes care of its responsibilities.

NDTV’s Executive Editor Sanjay Ahirwal said that the news channels will now have to pay attention to content, else the nation will reject them. There has to be a middle path between the pressures of the market and morality.

Senior journalist Zafar Agha said that since the TRP decides the channels’s move, the question now that needs to be asked is whether journalism itself has lost its meaning.

The discussion was steered by Onkareshwar Pandey, managing editor of The Sunday Indian’s Bhojpuri and Hindi editions and the managing president of the Broadcasters’ Club of India.
Before the close of the seminar Prof Arindam Choudhary summarized the main points of the discussion and thanked the invitees for their valuable inputs. He also thanked the head of the Times Foundation Puran Pandey. The close of the ceremony saw all attendees receivig momentos from Prof Choudhary and Pandey.

The guests for the event were Mr. Sudhanshu Deo, the famous free lance cartoonist and promoter of JBC school of Animation and Mr. Kishore Rath, the cartoonist of Daily Sambad who has immortalized ‘Kattakhya’ the most sought after front page show of Sambad. Prof. Surya Das Mohapatra played the role of moderator in the entire event.

Both the speakers had stressed on the core importance of Cartoon as a strong medium of Communication and justified how it will never fade away as a communication medium. Mr. Deo Stressed on the various elements of cartoon and how the new development in cartoon in form of digital animation has transformed the whole concept of cartoon and opened up many options for the students of management. CARTOON IS NOT FADING AWAY RATHER THE CREATIVITY TO SUSTAIN IT IS DIMINISHING DAY BY DAY....

Mr. Kishore Rath narrates some of his best lines which was typical of him and has made him an icon. The mix of Odia and English judiciously planted in Odia proverbs with sincere social message was Extremely entertaining for the students.
The students enjoyed the discussion immensely about how to be creative at work without being an Artist. Prof. Das Mohapatra emphasized on how to be creative at work to have solutions to day to day problems at work.

The idea behind conducting ‘Delhi Meri Jaan’ -The Delhi Quiz’ was to salute Delhi as it completed its 100 years of being the CAPITAL OF INDIA .The quiz was designed to test the knowledge of citizens of india about their State and to see how much patriotic inclination one had towards their country .The quiz made the audience and participants realise the importance of being a democratic state in a decisive manner.

The event saw huge participation from kids to adolescents .The quiz was carried in various forms like rapid fire ,MCQs ,sample questions asked randomly to the audience etc . The Quiz focused on the history, geography, current statistics and interesting facts of Delhi. It was a wonderful sight seeing the enthusiasm and zeal in the participants as well as the public while playing the quiz . The Prithvi Innovations in collaboration with GIDF Club of IIPM Lucknow organized a blood donation camp as a part of the National Youth Day Celebrations. 12th January marks the birthday of Swami Vivekananda and is observed as the National Youth Day. The ideal way to commemorate the 1st day of the week long events was by conducting a Blood Donation camp and creating awareness of the importance of blood donation. That is exactly what the students of GIDF CLUB of IIPM Lucknow did.

The creative and innovative students of IIPM brought out colorful posters highlighting the importance of blood donation with catchy slogans which motivated the students to come forward and donate blood. Students were actively participating thus increasing the overall enthusiasm. They queued up and waited patiently while the doctor did the preliminary checking. For many students it was the first experience of donating blood, so a sense of satisfaction was clearly visible as they were contributing towards a noble cause. The doctors and the staff of Vivekanand Polyclinic extended their full cooperation to make the camp a success. The combined efforts of all concerned resulted in the good collection of blood units, thereby making the event a success and eradicating the myths about Blood Donation.

Rs. 1,76,000 crores and counting! The scam is the biggest in the country ever – or rather, the sum total of all the other scams (that have been exposed) put together, multiplied by two and more! If not a joint parliamentary committee probe now, then when? A great democracy is one with a thriving opposition. After the last elections, I had raised a question. Is this the end of the road for the BJP for long? It looked so. BJP was stuck on its Hindutva mantra, while the Congress promised youth, which looked progressive and could connect with the masses better! After all, the Hindus themselves are so coexistential that they don’t like any communal stress in their lives. But then, complacency is the mother of all failures. And failure is the mother of all successes! Congress did two big blunders. Firstly, in a haste to promote Rahul Gandhi as its future leader – and in its fear that charismatic speakers like Jyotiradiya or Sachin Pilot or Milind Deora may overshadow the son – the Congress started destroying its biggest trump card, the youth factor, which had made it look so bright. The Congress saw to it that none of them had the courage to hog any limelight or be in any platform of importance; so much so that the public has virtually forgotten Congress’ youth brigade. And the truth is whatever the slavish media in India writes (it praises every rare semi-meaningful word that Rahul says as if it’s straight from Julius Ceaser). Rahul Gandhi, unfortunately, is still not good enough to single-handedly lead the Congress yet. Like they have done with Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Congress could have made best use of Rahul as the silent guy, while the other better speakers managed the party.

The second mistake is perhaps bigger and more dangerous. Protecting a dynasty may ruin a party but abetting corruption ruins the nation. The Congress ruined its Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s personal image of crystal clear integrity by entering into a series of mega scams. A majority of population in India, being illiterate, doesn’t understand policies much; but they understand ‘chori’. I believe a conspiracy by V. P. Singh created a wave in India which made him the Prime Minister from a nobody, thanks only to an allegation of corruption that he could make the public believe in. Rajiv was a man of definite personal integrity and was highly progressive and had started an anti-corruption drive in India against Indian businessmen. V.P. Singh was a friend of the industry, being a past commerce minister, and catching the moment, he made the Bofors allegation. Rajiv – a man of great progressive thoughts, great charisma and a Gandhi who had earlier swept the elections on a massive sympathy wave – lost the elections. I would say for no reason but a wave around corruption that the masses were falsely made to believe. Rajiv Gandhi, I believe, was personally not corrupt (for party funds, even the most honest politician depends on sources; and Rajiv might have depended on a single alternative instead of a number of Indian businessmen). But can I say the same about the current Congress? Well, only a joker can. Everyone else knows what’s happening in the Congress. Yes, there is a Manmohan Singh who is clean. But he sits atop a pile of corrupt people. CWG, Adarsh, 2G, it goes on... personal wealth creation at its best; and wealth being stacked offshore. The Supreme Court rightly asked, was the Prime Minister sleeping? Being personally clean as a leader is only half the job done. You have to make a system that cleans up the whole system.

And in this failure of Congress to provide clean governance, comes the hope for BJP and NDA for 2014. Forget Hindutva; concentrate on the massive dacoity of India. In every sphere. The masses understand it and they are totally convinced today that the UPA has started rotting inside out. There seems to be a sudden wave in the Congress on why should Mukesh Ambani remain the only one with 3 lac crore rupees. Gone are the days of the ‘hundred crore’ ministers. If figures are to be believed, today the key ministers are raking in thousands of crores. The country is being looted and sold off to the highest bidder... Oops, I got it wrong here – the lowest bidder, to be precise, who gives the highest kickback. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to accept and tolerate this. And this is where the need of opposition in a democracy comes in. The BJP needs to keep up its demand for a JPC probe. Take to the streets but the JPC is a must. And the probe must be totally transparent with complete media access during hearings. That’s the way it happened in Watergate, the Iran Contra, the Clinton case. That’s how it happens in real democracies. With the Assange case, it’s clear that America is unfairly using ownership of web domains – controlled by America – to close down various websites in order to hound and shut off WikiLeaks. India could lead the way in showing what a democracy is about for a change.

The JPC is also the only way everyone can be brought to the questioning table. Every other agency can be manipulated and managed in this country by the party in power. As I wrote in my previous editorial on the Radia tapes, the Indian media is right now too busy doing what it does best: go behind glamourised cases and magnify them to grab eyeballs and totally mislead and misinform the public. The part which was leaked till then proved nothing. There are lobbyists everywhere. The real issue here is that the government is caught in a web of corruption – perhaps facilitated by a lobbyist. Here we are talking about the issue of Rs.1,76,000 crores; and there we are speaking of a few stories that were being attempted to be planted here and there... What a mind blowing diversion from the real issue. It’s hilarious the way the media is happily going on and on bashing individual journalists (glamourous, easy preys and perfect vent for pent up jealousies), who cannot hit back, instead of hitting out at the real people who are behind this scam. What the opposition and media need to do right now is demand for the JPC probe, for that’s what the Indian masses need and want. Of course, a few weeks back, I myself wrote that our Parliamentarians have no right to waste the taxpayers’ money due to non-functioning of the Parliament. But as the magnitude of the scam gets unearthed, it’s clear that there’s more of tax payers’ money at stake in the scam than in the non-functioning of the Parliament. The masses, the tax payers, they have a right to a clean regime and the opposition must help them get their rights. That’s what makes a functional propeople democracy. And why not? After all, this perhaps is the sure-shot route for the NDA to be back in power in 2014 – as I said, nothing works with the aam junta better than the corruption plank.

To change this ‘demonocracy’ to a democracy, we must all join hands and demand for a judiciary that is not rotting and rusting!

Last week I was very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful, moving and inspirational seminar on the ‘Power of One’ (coverage of the same is there after my editorial)! The speakers included Tarun Tejpal, who so very inspirationally spoke about the founding fathers of our nation, their vision and saga of sacrifices. Indeed, hearing Tarun speak is always a pleasure, just as much as seeing him – a real life hero of public interest journalism in India – always is! His words had the power of making me forget for a while that the same Nehru, whose birthday is ironically celebrated as Children’s Day in India, founded an India where today, seven times more kids suffer from malnutrition than they do in China – something Tarun himself quoted. He spoke of how we shouldn’t forget where India resides – in the villages. And the onus was on us to fight for the right cause. He spoke of things that at least we never forget at The Sunday Indian. There was Neelem Katara who spoke next in the most moving manner on her battle to get justice for her son against the might of one of the biggest dons of north India. At one moment, she was confident; at another, she was hurt and tender; and yet, at all moments, she was brave! Sitting there, I was inspired and in tears – alternatively hoping that one day we could be instrumental in bringing an end to this demonocracy that prevails in India. Then of course spoke Rajinder Kachroo, the man who lost his son Aman Kachroo to the menace of ragging. He spoke how ragging was criminal – I couldn’t agree more. His journey to get stringent rulings passed against ragging was the story of sheer determination; and it made me more determined to keep our crusade to weed out the cause of ragging from its roots! Then came Binu Chandran, the real life hero who got Ghazi Baba, the dreaded Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist to his end. Binu did that through his saga of physical bravery, where the decision to be taken was clear – to send his people to fight or to lead from the front. He chose the latter and got this country glory. Hearing Binu was super inspirational but I knew it was beyond us to be a real part of any such battle. Yet, I kept reminding myself that the pen is surely no less mighty than grenades. Finally, of course, we had the water crusader of India Rajendra Singh speaking! His sense of humour floored all of us; yet, everyone got the simple message strong and clear – that we needed to give our children rivers and water instead of ‘gandaa nalaas’ and droughts – a cause our social wing the Great Indian Dream Foundation (GIDF) is very passionate about. The five speakers showed us the power of one in a country like India! Through their sheer grit, determination, bravery and commitment, they individually had indeed made a positive difference to this nation. The session was followed by a great round of questions and answers, mainly focusing around the issues of bravery versus fear and the need to be brave!

And then came the most difficult challenge, to get up and speak. Speak about the power of one; that is, about bravery versus fear and yet not spare the reasons behind the sheer requirement of these brave crusades. Listening to them had recharged my brain. While I was in total awe of these amazing people, I knew very well that forget taking the all-or-nothing risk of putting everything at stake for journalism of public interests that Tarun epitomized, I was not even sure whether I – if I had been a friend of Nitish Katara – wouldn’t have myself turned a hostile witness were I to face the threat of the underworld mafia. I didn’t know if I would have had enough determination to keep pursuing the courts to change ragging laws, had I been in the place of Rajinder Kachroo. Sixteen years back, my younger brother died in a road accident – the sorrow killed me – but I didn’t do anything at all to make the Indian roads safer or get laws enacted to make it compulsory for the pillion rider to wear a helmet – though fortunately the law got enacted on its own. Of course, I was candid enough to realize that I couldn’t have done anything remotely as brave as what Binu Chandran had done. Yet, I refused to believe that I was not brave; or that, given the right environment, I wouldn’t stand up for the right cause. I refused to accept that I was fearful. I knew there was something that was missing and was required to complete the story... some realities we must be aware of, and should take up as a serious cause to fight for! Perhaps only health, education and employment come ahead of the issue I’m going to discuss. And that is the demand for a judicial system that can alter the concept of India and bring us a huge lot closer to a real democracy rather than the ‘demonocracy’ that we live in.

When Barack Obama was running for the US presidency, the common joke in America was that win or lose, Obama was sure to get a job with MSNBC! And when he won, the joke was that “all the channels declared Barack Obama as the US President at 11 in the night; MSNBC declared him the winner six months back.” That’s representative of how blatantly MSNBC had lobbied to make Obama the US President. And every media house with an ideology and conviction does so. Yes, that’s the job of media houses and of journalists with character, ideology and convictions.

Wake up to reality, my friends! In UK and USA elections, newspapers rally behind individual parties till the very end – openly. And it’s not because the party owns the media house. During the very next elections, the media houses could support the opposition. That’s how it is in all true democracies where media doesn’t fear a backlash if the party they don’t support comes to power. India is, of course, not a democracy. Behind the illusion of democracy, demons – almost one and all – rule this country, making it a unique “demonocracy”. What the government of India does is that they create cases similar to what they did with Tehelka, and makes it clear that if you try to expose the government, they will get back at you. So, before elections, Indian media – one and all (unless in regional cases where parties themselves own media) – is always polite about the ruling party even if they per se support the opposition. And this, because they fear that in case the ruling party returns post elections, they’ll have to face the music! Even the largest media house, the Times of India, has not been spared in the past, with Ashok Jain being harassed to his literal death with cases being fabricated against him for trying to act smart with the government! Compare this with the nine page special feature that The Sun ran in 1992 on the day UK elections with the headlines commenting, “If Kinnock wins today, will the last person to leave Britain please turn out the lights?”

If our Parliamentarians cannot make productive use of Rs 530 crore that we pay to run the Parliament, they have no right to waste it as well!

In my editorials, I have vividly written on our Parliament and Parliamentarians. From suggesting that our Parliament be outsourced (after 26/11), to asking political parties to pave the way for educated youth, to criticising the way our Parliament works, to how our Parliamentarians put their personal priorities above the national ones, I have often written about them. Be that as it may, the recent deadlock in our Parliament that lasted over eight long days made me come up with a few more urgently required and practicable measures. These eight successive days of adjournment cost the exchequer a staggering Rs 63 crores! In this whole winter session of Parliament, except for a couple of days, neither of the houses functioned normally for even one single session. For the uninitiated, as per official figures cited in various media, the total budget for the two houses for 2010-11 is estimated to be around a whopping Rs 530 crore!

For the first eight days of the Parliament in this season, only 47 minutes out of 2,880 minutes were spent on the question hour in the Lok Sabha, while in Rajya Sabha, out of a total 2,400 minutes, a jaw-dropping zero minutes were spent on the question hour. Worse, only 11 percent of total time in Lok Sabha and 2.25 percent of total time in Rajya Sabha was spent on productive work! And mind you, this is just a waste of one kind wherein the Parliament session is disrupted by our unruly Parliamentarians! The second variant of wastage comes in the form of absenteeism of our Parliamentarians. In the winter session last year, attendance in the Lok Sabha was between 56 percent and 75 percent with an average for the session at 66 percent. And the third variant of wastage is in the form of non-participation of any kind from our Parliamentarians. As per PRS Legislative Research, only 52 percent of the members in Lok Sabha participated in any debate in the last winter session. Of those who spoke, 25 percent restricted themselves to just a couple of debates while merely three percent MPs participated in more than 10 debates. Similar trends can be observed in both the houses since the last couple of years.

Such an irresponsible attitude by our Parliamentarians not just wastes colossal amounts of public funds, but also delays many important bills that are awaiting their approval – a few of them since many years. Nothing much can be expected from them as a majority of them are bereft of any education and a large number of them are hardened criminals who could make it to the Parliament by muscle and money power. But then, in the absence of any kind of refrain, these Parliamentarians are holding not just the Parliament, but the whole nation to ransom. It is high time that we set up a legally enforceable code of conduct, which makes it mandatory for these Parliamentarians to adhere to certain minimum expected standards. Non-adherence to the code could possibly result in penalties (monetary, non-monetary or both) and repetition of acts that go against the code could even result in legal action.

I am sure that after reading the heading, everyone must be restless to know how? But have some patience. It’s a story I repeat often. And I must repeat it again today. As a child, I remember having considerable friends in school. I am sure everyone has. But my friends’ circle from the very beginning had a specialty – it had only those people who were all very, very good in studies. If you are wondering how, the answer to that is in the place I used to stay, and still stay; a locality called Chittaranjan Park in New Delhi. This was originally that locality in Delhi where all those who had gotten displaced from Bangladesh during the partition were given a place to settle down. So, it used to be called the ‘EPDP colony’ i.e. East Pakistan Displaced Persons’ colony. This locality had its very special characteristics – maybe someday I will write about them all – including the one I referred to; i.e. it gave me, during my very early childhood, a group of friends who were all toppers! Being a locality of mostly lower middle class displaced people, the relatively well-to-do amongst them – that is, those who were middle class – managed to put their children in public schools like mine – the reputed Delhi Public School (DPS) – and believed the only way out of this lower middle class or middle class existence was to be exceptional in studies. Of course, coupled up with the Bengali orientation towards arts and literature, our locality produced some of the most brilliant students for our school. So, if our school had 15 buses and 150 scholar badge holders (the ones who excelled in studies), I believe more than a fifth of those students used to go in the bus that used to go through CR Park. My father being a teacher, he attracted friendship with all those parents whose children were toppers; and that’s how most of my friends were exceptional in studies!

‘There is no shortcut to success — the only way is through continuous effort’ they used to say in the old days. It is something that celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor largely agrees with, having learnt from his own experience of hosting a cookery show on television for the last 17 years.

“If you want to succeed, the only way is to put in an equivalent amount of continuous effort,” says Kapoor. “You have to put in the requisite labour each time in order to achieve success and cannot afford to rest on the laurels of your last success. Each time I host my cookery show, I start afresh,” he says.

Management guru Arindam Chaudhuri believes implicitly in the principle of consistent effort and he illustrates this with an example. Arindam had a problem with the topic of differential calculus while he was doing his management studies. “Every paper that had an element of differential calculus in it, I couldn’t do well in initially. But then by practising non-stop, I remember I topped the paper finally!

One has to keep trying hard, at times fall, get up and try again. This is one of the key secrets to success. Too often things haven’t happened the way I wanted and it’s only continuous striving that’s helped. I believe that passion is of no use unless it’s backed by sustained sincerity.”

TV actor Sweta Keswani, who while believing in the usefulness of luck in success, also believes that one has to back it up with effort.”When I was relatively new as an actress, I made a cold call to a well-known lady producer for work. We spoke for some time and she seemed keen to have me in her production but no call came from her office as expected. Two weeks later the channel I worked for recommended me to her and I went to see her again. When I reminded her that I’d met her a fortnight earlier on my own, without the clout of a powerful channel behind me, she at once approved my selection. I went on to do 162 episodes of the serial, owing a good part to the effort I’d made earlier. Effort is an indispensable pre-requisite for success. Don’t expect luck to find you, you have to go out and seek it.”

And as Sanjeev Kapoor says, success when achieved is the biggest motivator. “Once you achieve it, you’re motivated to go out and make even more efforts.”

It looks like it’s going to be a swell season for producer Arindam Chaudhuri. His upcoming film ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ has a strong storyline and the characters will surely appeal to the masses.

‘Do Dooni Chaar’ has pure Punjabi feel

The man, who had made a mark in the industry for his distinctive movies, had only a series of flops to his credit, but this hasn’t bogged him down a bit and he’s still confident that his latest Rishi-Neetu starrer will connect with the audiences.

Pinning all his hopes on his upcoming film, which is supposedly inspired from his father’s life as a teacher, Arindam stated, “The story is about the sweet journey of a middle-class man from a two-wheeler to a four-wheeler. It is about how he copes with the demands of his children and at the same time competes with neighbours."

This comedy film, which is directed by debutant Habib Faisal, has traces of Punjabi feel and is completely Delhi centric.

When he was asked that his lead stars Rishi-Neetu will manage to attract the audiences to the theatres, Arindam stated, “Yes, big stars definitely help in bringing the audience to the theatre, but if your script is not good, audience will not relate to it. Getting a star is not an issue, but getting a good script definitely is. We have confidence in our script.”

Bringing Rishi-Neetu on-screen together was challenge for Arindam Chaudhuri

Taking a cue from the latest reports, it’s also believed that for essaying the female lead in ‘Do Dooni Chaar’, Juhi was first approached and not Neetu, as Arindam wasn’t sure whether Neetu will be interested in a comeback after three decades.

Talking about Neetu, Arindam Chaudhuri stated, "Rishiji was not sure whether Neetuji will agree. We approached Juhi Chawla but the actress did not want to play mother to an 18-year-old. We finally decided to go back to Neetuji and she loved the script."
The producer also added that it was a huge challenge and achievement for him to bring Rishi and Neetu on screen together for ‘Do Dooni Chaar’.

It’s also believed that to get a middleclass look in the film, Neetu had gone through a complete makeover and her clothes had been bought from Sarojini Nagar.

Someone had once quoted, “It is worth walking the extra mile, if at the end of it you know you have brought about a change.” With the same fervor, The Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) also decided to walk the extra mile to reach out to one of the greatest social and civil rights activists of the present times – Irom Chanu Sharmila.

A 3-member team from IIPM, led by its Founder-Director, Dr. M K Chaudhuri recently visited Sharmila in her room at the high-security ward of the government-run Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital at Porompat in Imphal East to confer upon her the IIPM - Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize. The award, consisting of a gold medal, a citation and a prize amount of Rs. 51 lacs (over USD 100,000) acknowledges her selfless and determined struggle to restore peace and justice in Manipur.

Dr. M K Chaudhuri, Founder Director – IIPM and Chairman, IIPM Awards Committee stated, “It makes me feel so proud and satisfied to come in touch with Sharmila. She is truly a living legend - a crusader who has selflessly struggled to bring about peace and justice in her land. She should be looked up as an icon for one and all, who has never swayed away from her vision. We all at IIPM salute her for her courage and grit and will continue to extend moral support to her cause.”

IIPM over the years has instituted various awards to recognize people from different walks of life, who have contributed in their own fields and have tried to become an element of change for the society at large. This year in April, IIPM instituted the Manavata Vikas Award, which was given out to people who have worked in the socio-political domain and in the fields of people centric economics and people-centric management. The awardees included academicians like Dr Ashok Sanjay Guha and Prof Sunanda Sanyal, popular columnists like Gurcharan Das and Swaminathan S Anklesaria Aiyar and social thinkers like painter Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya, Medha Patkar and Mahasweta Devi. He is always in the news. Either for his management institute that dares to take on the IIMs, for his books that sell like hot cakes or for his blasé views. In a chat with Society, Arindam Chaudhuri is at his candid best

When it comes to studying management in India, the first name that possibly strikes any mind is the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), the hallowed chain of management institutes in the country. However, one institute that may not have taken over completely, but has definitely challenged this prestigious chain of IIM, is the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), currently headed by management guru and dean, Arindam Chaudhuri. Over the years, the institute has received mixed reactions from people within the industry, but that really hasn’t deterred the spirit with which Arindam Guides and moulds the institute. After all, he is the dean of an institute where he studied once. Speaking about his journey with the IIPM he says, “Though the IIPM was started in 1973, I formally took over in 1996 and these 14 years have been great! I was a student at the IIPM from 1989 to ‘96, doing my MBA and fellowship, During this time I realized that the institute was giving the best possible education, while in India the perception was still that the IIM, were the last word in management education.” Exuding confidence at the quality of its education, he continues, “The big thrust came when in 1996 we decided to go aggressive with our marketing to convey that education at the IIPM was decisively superior to that given by IIMs”

One thing led to the other and Arindam Chaudhuri felt the need for a firm that would facilitate the IIPM with management consultancy in India. That’s how the Planman Consulting Group was born. Talking about the venture, he says. “The decision to aggressively market the IIPM actually gave rise to the Planman Consulting Group. We realized that while our courses were far more in content than those at the IIMs, where we lacked, despite our strong research orientation, was our industry interface. Then of course, one thing led to another and Planman today is one of India’s largest multi-interest consulting groups.”

From IIPM to Planman and then to films, Arindam, conscious of dabbling in myriad fields, speaks about his skills not only as a professional but also throws considerable amount of light on his multi-tasking skills. One wonders then, was the move to constantly try out new things a well thought decision, or was it a case of accidentally putting his fingers into many pies? He explains. “To start Planman we had to get good people and these people often wanted to do their own thing. So to get those good people on board, wherever we saw them, we started various activities that they were passionate about. One such person is Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee, the CEO of our film company. He said he was willing to join us if we were ready to get into advertising agency business since he was creatively inclined.” He continues. “Though the ad agency didn’t quite get a great start, he landed up getting an offer to produce a film in Bangla which was at a budget of only 40 lakhs, something that we could afford then. We took an instant liking to the film and made it. It was a huge hit. That was in 2002 and there has been no looking back since then.”

Speaking about films one cannot resist asking Arindam Chaudhuri about the way he criticized the celebrated Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionair, while it not only got India its Oscar but also placed Indian cinema on a world pedestal. He laments, “Slumdog Millionnaire only exploited India in a lopsided, negative manner which in the times of western financial meltdown, the western people loved watching, because India was defying the meltdown and was being looked upon as the next big thing. It was amazing for them to sit and mock our growth story. I didn’t find any reason to enjoy that.” Continuing his tirade against the film, he says, “It was an intelligently made British film and in that sense India didn’t win the Oscar for it. A couple of Indians for their work in the film got the Oscar and I am proud of them.”

It’s not only movies that have miffed arindam, he is straight forward at criticizing the new Indian media and magazine culture for misleading the readers. So did his unhappiness with the existing magazines lead him to start his own? He clarifies, “Magazines are a natural extension of our teaching process. If in classrooms we can teach thousands, then through books we can teach lakhs and through our magazines we can teach crores every week.” Continuing about his issues with other magazines, he says, “Of course, I have very strong issues with the way the new Indian media loves highlighting issues just to make readers a dustbin of useless and misleading information, with amission to make them morons. Today, there is plethora of news all around and to me the job of a news magazine is not to give news all over again but to analyze news and give readers a perspective, an analysis. That’s what my magazine The Sunday India aims to do and that is why it is available in 14 languages because English readers have mostly lost their ability to get charged up. India lies in its interiors and that is where we hope to create a difference.” Arindam Chaudhuri’s inclination towards literature and books is evident. About the books he has written, he proudly says, “My books, both, Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch and The Great Indian Dream sold the highest ever in their respective categories of Management and Economics. My latest book Discover The Diamond in You is on success. It has sold more than 1.5 lack copies since its launch in 14 Languages.”

For someone whose opinions are razor sharp, we cannot resist but ask him his take on journalism and the media in general. To which he readily says, “Journalism is a different ball game. It’s more vision driven. As viewers and readers mature and become more educated and initiated, they will throw away the crass journalism that you see on TV, specially dished out for our illiterate masses. “He continues, “We need to spread education among the masses then journalism of catering to vested interests and illiterates will automatically start disappearing.” And about his future plans, especially with regards to the management scenario, he divulges, “My future plan is to consolidate all that we have started over time, no expansion is on the cards. The future of management education is great with more and more private players coming up and giving established names a run for their money.”

Speaking about boring and lethargic patterns and norms, for anyone who has had one good look at Arindam Chaudhuri will vouch for the fact that change reflects not only in the way his institute runs but also in the way he carries himself Breaking away from the mundane and monotonous corporate look, Arindam’s style is indeed futuristic. About his unique pony-tailed look, he shares, “I don’t know if I am unconventional. I think I speak very direct and plain and there are sections that get affected by it. Yes I do often hit out at status quo when I see them passing off without being questioned, like the IITs and the IIMs. But it’s a free country and every intelligent man as well as a joker has the right to free speech.” He continues, not before signing off, “And as for my dressing style, I think, though 38, I am still young at heart and love to experiment.”

Recently he dazzled the Koramangala Indoor Stadium, where he became a Management guru anchoring a B- School Quiz organized by IIPM.

The entire stadium was clapping and whistling in 2 minutes as soon as he started his conversation. He had spent six years of his life in Bangalore untill he moved to Delhi.

Shahrukh Khan was a complete hit with his impromptu comments but he also gave wise advice on the concept of success. He said he works hard in his life as he is scared of poverty.

SRK ended the programme by displaying his dancing skills before the audience.

Aamir Khan, then Salman Khan, now finally Shah Rukh Khan will be visiting Bangalore

Bangalore turned muse for Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots when the film’s crew shot portions at the IIM campus here, last year. Salman Khan hopped from Hyderabad to Bangalore to promote his film Veer in two cities in one hectic day.

Interestingly, it’s not a film that’s bringing Shah Rukh Khan to Bangalore. Shah Rukh will play quizmaster at an inter-business school competition.

Tied by a three-year contract to host the finale of IIPM’s annual nationwide business school quiz contest, the actor put in his first show last year in New Delhi. This year, the venue shifts to Koramangala’s National Games Village on February 8. Shah Rukh will host Dare 10 where six teams will be put to the test by the witty actor. “It will be wonderful to come to Bangalore,” says Shah Rukh.

Dare 10 is part of IIPM’s college fest which will have around 150 national and international colleges participating in various events, represented by nearly 3,000 students in Bangalore. “We always believe in doing things in a big manner and who better than Shah Rukh Khan can help us make it larger than life. Dare ’09 was held in Delhi last year and SRK was at his wittiest, wackiest best,” says Arindam Chaudhuri, founder-director IIPM.

Arindam Chaudhuri - The fourth National Award for our films within two years!

Management guru and now producer, Arindam Chaudhuri is on a roll, it seems. In the 55th National Awards ceremony held in Delhi last week, he picked up his second consecutive national award from President Pratibha Patil. Last year, it was for his Bengali film Faltu, and this year, it’s for his English film The Last Lear. Apart from these two, last year, actor Prosenjit received a special award for his performance in Planman’s Dosor, while this year, Shefali Shah got the best supporting actor award for The Last Lear.

After receiving the award, an excited Arindam Chaudhuri said, “It feels great. This is the fourth National Award for our films within two years!” Apart from three totally commercial comedy films lined up for release in the coming months, including the Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh starrer Do Duni Chaar, there is also buzz that he will soon be directing his next film. “Yes, it’s a period film, based on a historical event that I’m planning,” he said.

Under the International Student Exchange Programme at IIPM, Undergraduate and Graduate students of management institutes and universities from all across the world visit the IIPM campuses in India for a duration varying anything between three weeks to one trimester. After the successful completion of the programme, the students receive academic credits for the same.

During the entire phase of their stay, the international students who come down to the IIPM campuses need to bear the cost of their food and accommodation. Under certain cases, accommodations are provided to these students at the residences of the IIPM students to give them a feel of Indian custom and culture. IIPM charges no tuition fees for the courses offered to these students under the student exchange programme.

It is a firm belief at IIPM that the globalised world requires more managers who can effectively and efficiently function in a multi-cultural environment. This is the reason why at IIPM more stress is given to help these international students develop cross-cultural management skills, social skills and language skills. It also helps these students to explore more growth opportunities across the world.

Recent Student Exchange Initiatives at IIPM:

State University - Higher School of Economics, Moscow
Students from HSE, Moscow visited the IIPM Campus at Delhi for a period of 2 weeks to undergo an advanced course in Strategy and Marketing Management. During their stay, they got an opportunity to visit Mc. Donald’s training centre in India to understand the Mc Donald India marketing mantra and later at ITC e-Choupals in villages in Western Uttar Pradesh to understand rural marketing initiatives by one of India’s largest business conglomerate. They also enjoyed the best of Indian hospitality as they were accommodated at residences of IIPM students. This enabled the students to get a true flavor of Indianism along with the best academic inputs from the institute.

16 Students from JKU, Linz, were here in campus for a month to attend 3 exclusive courses: India’s Foreign Trade, Indian Financial System and Indian Culture & Cross Cultural Management, leading to transfer of credits for the same. Apart from various lecture sessions and visits to trade bodies, cultural centres and financial institutions, the students also got an opportunity to experience the best of Indian culture-curry - they attended exclusive sessions on Yoga and Meditation. There was quite a lot of fun in store for them as they participated in various in campus activities along with the IIPM students.

The Indian Institute of Planning and Management Mumbai organized an All India Writing Competition titled Parables – stories that change lives on the 5th of December. Students across 250 Colleges participated in the event, which required budding writers to write a story on their chosen Social Cause. To felicitate the winners a Seminar on Creative Writing was organized at the Rang Sharda Auditorium on the 16th of December.The All India Winners were Ms. Zainab Kakal – KC College Mumbai - 1st Place, Runner’s up – Ms. Saubhangini Singh – Women’s Christian College Chennai, and Ms. Joanne De Almedia – St Mira’s College Pune from the Undergraduate Section. In the Graduate and Post Graduate Section the winner was Ms. Sudha Sukumar – IIPM Hyderabad and the runners up were Janice D’souza NMIMS and Karishma Gupte KC College – Mumbai.

More than 250 Schools and Colleges participated in the event across India, Like Symboises, IIT, Bhartiya Vidya Peeth, St. Xaviers, Loyola Institute, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, St. Andrews, Lala Lajpat Rai etc.

The panelist for the seminar included renowned names like Gregory David Roberts - Shantaram Author,Tuhin Shah - A Thing Called Love - Author & Script writer Ruchi Narayan - Author Director Calcutta Mail, Director Movie Kal,Alpana Choudhary - Freelance Journalist contibuting to Verve, DNA, TOI also written biographies of Famous actors like Dev Anand And Madubala,Priti Nayar Chakravarthy - Lowe Lintas Head Creative Director,Sanjay Jog - Political Editor - Financial Times.

The seminar was a continuing effort to IIPM’S endeavor to spread the awareness of the written word and also highlight various Social Causes. The winning entries highlighted important issues like Peer Pressure, Child Abuse, Under Aged Children Working etc.

The IIPM (The Indian Institute of Planning & Management) Think Tank, an independent, India-centric research body, is inspired by Dr. M.K. Chaudhuri’s vision of India as an economic powerhouse in the 21st century; a modern nation state where poverty becomes history and the underprivileged are not consigned to the dustbin of amnesia. The Marginalization of agriculture, Minimilization of industrial activity and Magnification of service sectors are three broad concerns that form the fulcrum of this particular issue. With its analysis and policy implications on broader patterns of these three sectors and some select specific ones like that of food processing, textiles, small-scale industries, tourism and etc. Agriculture, through decades has been grossly neglected. As a nation we have lost the potential of being the world’s ’Food Factory’. It is a strategic policy imperative to generate purchasing power to the fifty five percent of the population dependent on agricultural sector. This by itself would fuel the growth engine on a self sustaining basis. On the other hand we could not leverage the cost competitiveness of the manufacturing sector, as a nation, due to archaic labour policies and other repressive procedures. Moreover India Inc. critical success factor lies in an entrepreneurial class that is talented, gutsy and conversant. So it is urgent to create an enabling business environment which would enable these entrepreneur’s to churn out globally competitive products and services. Let the ‘Nuts and Bolts Revolt’……

Infrastructure is the very foundation on which a country’s industrial economy is built, while foreign trade and FDI are the modern day pillars that support it. We have grandiose ambitions about growing 8% annually, every year and becoming an economic giant, making foreign investment the only imperative. Yet we have attained notoriety among foreign investors for the tedious procedures, an apathetic bureaucracy, lacking infrastructure and unwarranted delays. Time has gone for policy makers to have realized ‘Foreign purse’ pectives’. Foreign investments not only act as a catalyst to sustainable growth but have tremendous positive ripple effects. It can also help to generate competencies with Indian manufacturing and thus lead us to become a trading powerhouse. The International Trade section features the highlights of the New Foreign Trade Policy, as a separate section, at last, for the convenience of the reader. The same has been dissected from an analytical point of view, incorporating the view points of sectoral experts and researchers. We believe India should unhesitatingly opt for ‘International Intercourse’ by reducing transactional costs. More than any investment, good infrastructure investment is a strategic key to bring out inherent strengths of any nation, making it work for growth, global competitiveness and poverty reduction. We believe that adequate attention to Inland Waterways and Rural Infrastructure can make a vital difference to the nation. Let there be no ‘Constricted Constructions’.

217 years ago, in 1789, French Revolutionaries revolted against injustice of feudalism and called for Liberty, Fraternity & Equality. This resulted in a kind of socio-economic equality in Europe, which prevails till date. As an example, if engineers are paid USD 45,000 USD 60,000 per month, workers, even sweepers, are also paid around USD 15,000 USD 20,000 per month; all of them enjoy life of social dignity and live without any discrimination and exercise their democratic rights backed by universal literacy and upheld by truly democratic parties which practice inner-party democracy. The difference in income is thus in a ratio of 3:1. This is also what it should be in an ideal society (see Appendix on Theory of Production of Skills by means of skills in The Great Indian Dream, by Malay Chaudhuri and Arindam Chaudhuri). This is not so in India. Here, graduates from IIMs and IITs are paid around Rs. 50,000 per month, while agricultural labourers and unorganized workers consider themselves lucky if they earn Rs. 2,000 per month. In West Bengal, there are around 4,600 villages where a family of 5 has to live with just Rs. 850 per month. The situation is no different in most other parts of India.

For a family of five, the poverty line, as defined by today's prices, will be around Rs. 2,000 per month. We should better describe poverty line as DESTITUTION LINE. Similarly, our manipulative politicians, many of them with criminal background belonging to dynastic/feudal/caste-ist/Stalinist parties do not consider any family in the creamy layer, until and unless the family earns more than Rs. 80,000 per month or Rs. 10 lacs per annum. Therefore, 95% of the concessions allowed to SC/ST since independence till today, are enjoyed by people from the so called non-creamy layers (actually, belonging to rich by Indian standard). Most backward castes (MBCs like bhangis, doms and others) and the poorest of the poor numbering around 95% of SC/ST, enjoy hardly the remaining 5% of the concessions (quota facilities of different kinds). Interestingly, the gang of increasingly criminalized political party leaders, are now vocal to allot 27% of the seats in higher learning institutions to creamy layers (in the name of OBC quota), who already obtain merit seats of the general category, almost in proportion to their actual number (which is much below the number mentioned in Mandal Commission Report) in the population.

The aim of demand for reservations is to enable these creamy layers of OBC to get into the higher learning institutions, even at the cost of deterioration of the high standards of the internationally recognized centres of excellence, created over the past 50 years. If we really have to help the economically deprived and exploited MBCs, dalits and muslims, we have to provide their children educational facilities (like hostels, room teachers for a group of every 10 pupils, etc., as has been provided by the Al Amin Schools in West Bengal) from the primary school level to higher secondary level. We may then see that these oppressed and deprived castes and communities automatically earn seats in the institutes of higher learning (medical colleges, IITs, IIMs, etc.) in proportion to their actual number in the population. The IIPM Think Tank has calculated that an annual allotment of Rs. 110,000 Cr per annum is required for the same. This money can be raised easily by increasing excise duties on various luxury items or by crossing the so called fiscal deficit limits, adhered to religiously by our government. Though otherwise, in every other sphere, they, unashamedly practice indiscipline, forget pledges given to people before elections, etc. etc.

If we really stand for equality, we have to see that potential merit present in all these castes and communities, blossoms in reality in the near future and not that these people continue to be suppressed for decades to come.

Besides, we also have to see that increasing inequality in the present system of distribution of national income disappear as early as possible, say within a generation (around 25 years). Right now, the remuneration of professionals, managers, doctors, engineers are increasing by 10-15% per annum. In case of unorganized agricultural labourers or workers, increase in income is hardly 1-2% per annum and in some years, even nil. If we need to achieve the goal as laid above, in the interest of equality, as understood by Western democracies, we have to design a system of income distribution, where the pattern of distribution of national income will just be reverse, of what it is today. Ideally, income of agricultural labourers and unorganized workers must increase by 12% per annum while the income of professionals should not increase by more than 3% per annum. This is possible even within the limits of a well regulated capitalist system, provided we remain committed to humanitarian goals of socio-economic equality. With 3% increase in income, compounded annually, the remuneration of professionals will improve from Rs. 50,000 per month now, to Rs. 100,000 per month in the next 24 years. In case of workers and agricultural labourers, wages of Rs. 2,000 per month will become Rs. 32,000 per month in 24 years, if income grows at 12% per annum, compounded annually. Those who subscribe to the above policy of National Income Distribution, have formed a students' movement named.

STUDENTS AGAINST CORRUPTION AND KICKBACKS (SACK).
Aim of SACK is also to help realize the noble goals as professed by Youth for Equality, but by adding on to the movement the aspect of a humane vision of equality in terms of income as well, and make it a permanent and sustainable platform. This body also aims to fight against political corruption (e.g., Vote-bank politics of castes and communities, which helps our politicians to disrupt the existing harmony among the people and manipulate them to grab political power at the state and national level) and kickbacks of all kinds (bribes, black money, etc.) earned by bureaucrats and politicians whenever there is an opportunity. Like Youth for Equality, SACK is also a very correct initiative and I urge more and more people to come forward and join SACK and fight for the correct cause of real equality for all Indians.

Let India 'shine', not only for the top 20%, but also for all our brothers and sisters, who have been subjected to a life of inhuman indignity and destitution, over the past centuries, be in the urban slums or rural habitations where dalits and muslims live.

The Business of B-School Rankings & The Big Farce

Intellectually and technically incompetent; advertisement and money driven, it's an annual joke

The ranking agency is yet to be determined, the methodology yet to be formulated, the parameters still to be decided - but the marketing team is already haunting a B-School management for advertisements like a swarm of irritating mosquitoes. Be it business magazines or financial newspapers or news weeklies - it is a cool way to earn a few extra bucks - the annual B-School rankings. Magazines and newspapers apart, some ranking agencies have also floated websites to attract advertisements and earn as well while they “unbiasedly” rank the same B-Schools!!!

The ranking agencies (often one man shows existing solely to rank B-Schools annually) don’t have any competence or intellect to even determine criteria to rank B-Schools. Most of them go pathetically wrong even while trying to do quantitative pre poll predictions but are all boasting of accurate (though mostly qualitative and perception based) B-School rankings. The magazines which try to tie-up with more known market research agencies somehow seem to have an amazing manipulative hold over them - one look at it will reveal it to even a layman. Tough to believe that internationally acclaimed market research companies can come out with such jokes in the name of rankings. One wonders whom were they getting the questionnaires filled by??? Defunct institutes which haven’t innovated their courses in the last decade, institutes which hardly have 10 permanent faculty members, institutes about whose MBA course, students don’t even know of (!) are all there in the top!!! Institutes whose faculty members don’t do any industry consulting or even research for that matter, are there too!! Technology institutes whose only claim to fame are a few extra acres of grassland with no management expertise are also there! Institutes whose names wouldn’t even figure in any recruiters top 20 wish list are ranked in the recruiters top 10 as well as the overall top 10 B-Schools. And every editor - most of them, barring one or two, not qualified or educated enough to comment on management education - has a comment on how B-Schools need to be and how they think (whatever their intellect) that their B-School ranking is the best. They even go up to the extent of exploiting the media space (not owned by them) to take out their petty jealousies through frivolous comments!!

No, I don’t need to laugh at these ludicrous rankings and their so called reputed agencies - the public is already doing that. Seven rankings - seven media houses - seven agencies and... none of them seem to have any similarity (barring of course the top four names to bring credibility to their rankings).

Try to argue with these rankers and you will hit a wall - oh, these were based on perceptions of industry people - of course who can debate perception studies? Who perceives? Who cares! Nobody - till somebody like me takes out a perception study on journalists too!! Or some institute which believes in the judicial system of the country files a multi crore defamation case on them, asking them to reveal the data collection details to the public.

The bigger question though is what should be the correct criteria for B-School rankings and how to do it credibly. To me, B-School rankings need to do the following.

1. Academic institutions should be judged by the education they impart and its quality of faculty and not by the placements. Rankings need to bring in front of people the B-Schools which have the best course content and faculty. At the most there could be a separate ranking of best B-School and best placements so that institutes are not looked upon as placement agencies but are given academic respectability. Placements are important but if given extra weightage to judge an academic institution makes it favourably inclined towards institutes who have enjoyed a historical bias in the minds of the recruiters. The more the weightage on placements the more these institutes will repeatedly get high ranks and the more people will be fooled to believe that they are the best. It's a vicious circle.

2. Judging the quality of education is more of a qualitative thing. The key is in getting a huge number of leading experts (in the case of Oscars the number of voters are 6000+ to avoid any individual bias) on management like Ratan Tata, Narayan Murthy, M.S.Banga, Gursharan Das, Bibek Debroy, Arun Maira, Ashok Soota etc. giving their votes after going through the course contents and faculty details of the qualifying B-Schools.

3. Quantitative parameters like - no. of credits taught in each B-School, no. of permanent faculty members, amount of industry consulting done by each institute in terms of revenues, no. of research articles and cases developed every year, no. of international faculty members coming to teach, percentage of students going abroad to do projects, no. of Laptops per student - should be used to rank B-Schools in the parameters related to course contents, faculty, industry interface, research, global initiative and modern technology.

4. No ranking agency should be allowed to have any business interest with the institutes it ranks like running a website where the institutes advertise.

5. The entire process should be audited by a reputed firm like PWC or E&Y so that editors can’t manipulate rankings on the basis of their whims and fancies or other non ethical considerations.

6. The entire process and details of the above ranking should be made available for the common man through a website for the final seal of transparency.

Surprisingly IIPM’s name also features in these rankings often in spite of IIPM’s regular questioning of the credibility of most of these rankings. IIPM believes that it is the #1 B-School in India in terms of education, faculty, research and consulting, international exposure to the students and infrastructure. Whenever IIPM is ranked anywhere in the top 10 IIPM mentions it in its ads. As the Dean of IIPM, I mostly don’t agree with the ranking criteria but I do realise we have to live with it and keep voicing our opinion on the required changes in the methodology etc. of these rankings - till the changes really take place.

I do hope that very soon we would have B-School rankings which would follow the above suggestions and look more credible. Till then – like so often in today’s times - love and B-School rankings will continue to be bought by money.
